Why Man United manager Amorim feels Onana’s exit will clear ‘negative influences’ at the club

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is on his way to join Turkish side Trabzonspor after his relationship with manager Ruben Amorim broke down in the past month. Amorim feels Onana’s departure will clear ’negative influences’ at the club.

Ruben Amorim reportedly feels that the exit of controversial goalkeeper Andre Onana would rid Manchester United of ’negative influences’ as the Portuguese manager looks to build towards a ‘positive future’ with the English Premier League giants. Manchester United have shipped out many star players this season, including Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony.

The 29-year-old Onana, who has been criticised quite a bit by fans for his consistently error-prone performances, is set to be the latest to leave the club as Man United have agreed to loan him to Turkish side Trabzonspor.

How relationship between Onana and Amorim broke down

However, it’s not Onana’s on-field mistakes that broke down his relationship with Man United manager Amorim, but his conduct over the past month. Amorim was furious with Onana picking up a hamstring injury at the start of pre-season training, especially after he was spotted playing on muddy ground back home in Cameroon, reported The Sun.

Amorim was also not happy with Onana’s attitude in the training ground as he felt that the footballer did not show enough interest in the training sessions and reportedly did not even acknowledge Amorim’s presence on the pitch once.

“It felt like Andre was there to just show up but wasn’t there or showing any team mentality,” a source told The Sun.

All of this created a feeling in Amorim’s mind to push Onana out of the club as Man United landed 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens for £18.2million on last day of the 2025 summer transfer window. United also have Turkish keeper Altay Bayindir, who has played all three Premier League matches this season.

Onana’s first game of the season was against League Two team Grimsby Town in the League Cup, which ended in an embarrassing defeat for United, while the goalkeeper had a horrible game in the match.

With the so-called ’negative influences’ gone, Amorim reportedly feels that he has players who are committed to the club in the way he wants it to be and that could help him mount a serious challenge in the coming days, starting with the Manchester Derby this weekend.
