After losing his dog, Ohio man spent 13 years adopting unwanted senior dogs

After losing his beloved dog, this Ohio man spent more than 13 years adopting senior dogs no one else wanted and giving them a loving home

Inspired by the passing of his dog Wolfgang in 2012, Steve Greig embarked on a heartfelt mission to rescue senior dogs, offering them a nurturing environment for their remaining days. He now looks after a diverse group of elderly animals and showcases their journeys on Instagram, encouraging others to consider adopting older pets. His unwavering dedication has gained him widespread acclaim for transforming the lives of senior canines.

Losing a beloved pet can be devastating, but for Steve Greig, it became the beginning of a remarkable mission that has transformed the lives of dozens of overlooked animals. The retired accountant from Newark, Ohio, has spent more than 13 years rescuing senior dogs that were often considered too old or too sick to be adopted. What started with the loss of his dog Wolfgang in 2012 has grown into a lifelong commitment to giving elderly shelter animals a comfortable and loving home during their final years. Today, Greig shares his home with multiple senior dogs and other rescued animals, inspiring millions around the world to see the value in adopting older pets.

How losing a dog inspired Steve Greig’s mission

Greig’s journey began after his beloved dog, Wolfgang, was killed in a car accident in 2012. Struggling with grief, he sought advice from his veterinarian, who suggested adopting another dog. Instead of choosing a puppy, Greig asked a local shelter for the oldest dog that nobody wanted. That decision marked the beginning of a mission to rescue senior dogs that had little chance of finding permanent homes.

More than a decade of rescuing senior dogs

For more than 13 years, Greig has cared for dozens of elderly dogs, often sharing his home with around nine senior dogs at a time. Many of the animals arrive with age-related health problems, including blindness, heart disease, arthritis and diabetes. Despite the extra care they require, Greig believes senior dogs make wonderful companions and deserve to spend their remaining years surrounded by love rather than in shelters.

Greig recently moved into a historic mansion in Newark, Ohio, giving his growing family of rescued animals more space. Alongside the senior dogs, the property is home to several other rescued animals, including a pig named Bikini, rabbits, ducks, chickens and turkeys. The dogs are free to roam much of the house and grounds, creating an environment designed around their comfort and well-being.

Caring for elderly pets is a full-time commitment

Looking after multiple senior animals requires careful planning and dedication. Many of Greig’s dogs need daily medication, specialised diets and regular veterinary visits. His daily routine revolves around feeding, grooming, administering medication and ensuring every animal receives individual attention. Although the work can be demanding, he has often said that the joy of seeing elderly dogs thrive makes every effort worthwhile.

Inspiring millions through social media

Greig shares the lives of his rescued animals on Instagram through the account @wolfgang2242, named after the dog who inspired his mission. The account has attracted more than a million followers, with videos and photographs showing the unique personalities of his senior pets. His posts have encouraged many people to consider adopting older animals that might otherwise spend the rest of their lives waiting in shelters.

Recognised for giving senior dogs a second chance

Greig’s dedication has earned national recognition. In 2025, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) honoured him with its Citizen Hero Award, recognising his efforts to raise awareness about senior pet adoption. He has also worked with animal welfare organisations and co-authored The One and Only Wolfgang, which tells the story of how one dog’s memory inspired a mission that has changed countless lives.

Why senior dogs are often overlooked

Older dogs generally spend much longer in shelters than younger animals because many adopters prefer puppies or younger pets. Senior dogs may also have medical conditions that require ongoing care, making them less appealing to potential owners. Animal welfare organisations, however, point out that older dogs are often calmer, already house-trained and form deep bonds with the people who give them a second chance.

A mission that continues to change lives

More than a decade after losing Wolfgang, Steve Greig continues to open his home to elderly animals that others pass by. His story has become a powerful reminder that every shelter animal deserves love, regardless of age. By giving senior dogs a safe and caring place to spend their final years, Greig has inspired people around the world to look beyond a pet’s age and recognise the companionship, loyalty and affection that older animals still have to offer. <a href=Go to Source
