From Craving to Crime Scene: How a Simple Biryani Run Became a Warning

What began as a simple food run for three friends quickly turned into a night of fear and chaos in Chennai, Tamilnadu. The young men, all residents of Anna Nagar, set out for a late-night biryani stop in Pulianthope, a neighbourhood known for bustling food stalls even after midnight.

As they approached the Perambur bridge, their evening took a frightening turn. Two strangers on a motorbike intercepted them, brandishing a knife and demanding their mobile phones. Before fleeing, the duo threatened to track the victims down if they dared to report the incident, adding an ominous layer to the ordeal.

Swift Police Action

The shaken friends wasted no time contacting the Pulianthope police. Responding quickly, officers patrolled the area and spotted two men lingering suspiciously near the scene. When the officers attempted to question them, the encounter escalated.

The suspects, visibly intoxicated, hurled abuse and refused to cooperate. Their aggressive behaviour raised immediate red flags, prompting the officers to detain them for further questioning.

As the police tried to take them into custody, the situation spiralled. The men suddenly produced a hidden knife and attempted to stab the officers. A struggle followed, during which constable Ayyappan sustained a cut to his left hand and his uniform was ripped.

Despite the attack, the police managed to overpower the duo and secure them in a patrol jeep, preventing what could have become an even more dangerous confrontation.

Chaos Inside the Station

The drama didn’t end once they reached the station. Still under the influence of alcohol, the suspects shouted obscenities, threatened suicide, and smashed the glass in the police inspector’s office.

Their erratic behaviour underscored the volatile nature of the night. Officers maintained control and ensured that no one else was harmed, eventually locking the men up until they sobered.

By the following morning, the suspects had calmed enough to be questioned properly. They were identified as Harshad and Salman Basha, both residents of the Pulianthope area.

Investigators recovered the stolen mobile phones and a Dio bike believed to have been used in the crime. With evidence in hand, the police produced the men in court, where they were formally remanded to judicial custody.

A Warning to Night Owls

The incident has sparked concern in the Pulianthope neighbourhood and beyond. Residents and late-night food lovers alike have been urged by Chennai police to exercise caution, especially when visiting eateries during odd hours.

While the quick action of the Pulianthope police ensured the suspects were swiftly apprehended, the case serves as a reminder of the risks that can accompany late-night outings.

What began as a quest for a midnight plate of biryani turned into a violent encounter, but also highlighted the importance of prompt police response and community awareness.

For Chennai’s night owls, the message is clear: stay alert, travel in groups, and never underestimate the value of reporting suspicious behaviour immediately.
