Pellet Gun Controversy: Pellet Gun Row Escalates as Opposition Cites Police Records, Government Denies Firing Allegations

The political battle over the alleged use of pellet guns during the July 20 student protest has intensified, with the opposition presenting police records and medical claims to challenge the government’s denial. Opposition leaders cited a General Diary (GD) entry, claiming it mentions the use of anti-riot equipment and pellet guns on instructions from senior police officials during the protest. They argued that officials involved report to the Ministry of Home Affairs and questioned the accountability of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The opposition also referred to alleged injuries suffered by protesters, including students Sahil Lochab and Nutan Topo, claiming hospital records and eyewitness accounts support their allegations. Congress leaders demanded an independent investigation and accountability for the police action. The government, however, has maintained that no firing took place and that allegations of firing orders are baseless. The issue continued to dominate Parliament proceedings, with opposition MPs staging protests and demanding answers from the government. The controversy remains a major political confrontation between the ruling party and opposition over the handling of student demonstrations.
