'Alice' fame actress, Polly Holliday, passes away at 88

Clouds of grief loom over the entertainment industry, as it lost yet another talented soul, the beloved actress Pollyw Holliday. Famous for her character of Florence Jean Castleberry in the sitcom ‘Alice,’ the actress breathed her last at the age of 88, as reported by USA Today. Theatrical agent Dennis Aspland told the news portal that Polly passed away on September 9, 2025, at her home in Manhattan. As of now, the cause of her death has not been disclosed.

Polly Holliday – A legacy to be remembered

The Golden Globe winning actress, Polly Holliday, was one of the most gifted and loved stars of the entertainment industry. One of her most appreciated and popular works was as Florence Jean Castleberry in the comedy series ‘Alice.’ Her iconic catchphrase, “Kiss my grits,” lives rent-free in the head of her audience. Polly played Florence in four seasons of the show and then exited it to join its spin-off. Titled, ‘Flo,’ this series ran for two seasons.The actress was awarded with Golden Globes twice; once in 1979 and the other time in 1980. Not just this, she got four Emmy nominations for her work in the sitcom genre.

Polly Holliday’s journey beyond television

Polly’s art and success went beyond television. She received immense love for her Broadway career, where she was part of ‘All Over Town,’ ‘Arsenic and Old Lace,’ and ‘Marco Polo Sings a Solo.’ She had a Tony nomination in her name as well for the best featured actress, for her role in ‘Big Mama’, revival of ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.’The late artist had immense love for the craft and stage, and thus, in 1992, she told The Tampa Bay Times, “An actor is unfortunate if he doesn’t get to spend a lot of time onstage. When you’re onstage, you get to practice every night.”Last but not least, she appeared in some classic Hollywood movies as well, including ‘Gremlins,’ ‘The Parent Trap,’ and ‘All the President’s Men.’ Go to Source
