Chief Ministers of Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala on Wednesday directed officials to help bring back citizens from their state who remain stranded in Nepal.

Demonstrations began Monday in the capital against the government’s ban on social media and corruption, driven by angry young protesters who dubbed themselves the “Gen Z” movement.

But they escalated into an outpouring of rage nationwide with government buildings set on fire after at least 19 people were killed in a deadly crackdown.

Indian tourists have taken to social media to highlight that they remain stranded and urged authorities to help them.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah directed his government officials to ensure the safe return of 30 Kannadigas stranded at Kathmandu airport in Nepal. He directed chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh to ensure the safe return of those stranded.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday said as many as 200 Telugu people are stranded in riot-hit Nepal, and that Minister Nara Lokesh has been entrusted with monitoring real-time developments.

Earlier on Tuesday, several Telugu-speaking families told News18 that they were stranded at a top hotel in Nepal’s capital city and shifted to a nearby guest house as a precautionary measure.

“We are in constant touch with the Embassy of India in Kathmandu and coordinating through local representatives to safeguard the welfare of these families,” an official from Andhra Pradesh Bhavan said.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday sought immediate intervention of the Centre to ensure the safe evacuation of tourists from the state stranded in Nepal, which is witnessing civil unrest.

Vijayan said he wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar seeking help in this regard.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday said her government is in constant touch with embassies of Nepal and India for safe return of the city residents from the violence-hit Himalayan nation.

In a post on X, Gupta said she had a long telephonic conversation with Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Shankar Sharma, and India’s Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava.

“Our government is in constant contact with both embassies and relevant agencies to ensure the safety, assistance, and earliest possible return of Delhi residents stranded in Nepal,” she said.
