NDA candidate and Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan was on Tuesday elected 15th Vice-President of India, comfortably defeating his rival INDIA bloc candidate and former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy.
His mother, Janaki Ammal, expressed happiness over CP Radhakrishnan’s victory, saying that it is a matter of great joy that her son has been elevated to a top position.

His mother fondly recalled the story behind his name. While speaking to news agency ANI, Janaki Ammal said that she had named her son after former President of India, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
She said that when her son was born, the then President of the country, Radhakrishnan, was in office and, like her, was a teacher. She named her son in the former President’s memory.
“When my son was born, the then-President Radhakrishnan was in office. He was a teacher, and I too was a teacher. In his memory, I named my son after him,” she told the news agency.

She further recalled how her husband had asked the intention behind naming the son Radhakrishnan.
“At that time, my husband looked at me and asked, “Are you giving this name because you want your son to become the President one day?” After 62 years, just as my husband had said, it has come true. I feel very happy about it,” she added.
A day earlier, his brother, CP Kumaresh, expressed happiness over Radhakrishnan’s victory, saying that it is a great joy that the latter will now take on the responsibility of managing the Rajya Sabha.
“I am very, very happy. It is a great joy that Radhakrishnan has been elected as the Vice President. He has to take the responsibility of efficiently managing the Rajya Sabha, and he will carry it out successfully. He will also uphold PM Modi’s trust,” news agency ANI quoted Kumaresh as saying.

CP Radhakrishnan Becomes India’s 15th VP
NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan was elected as the 15th Vice President of India on Tuesday, bagging 452 votes against the Opposition nominee and former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy’s 300 votes.
Announcing the result, Rajya Sabha Secretary General and Returning Officer PC Mody said 767 MPs out of 781 cast their votes with a total turnout of 98.2%. He said 752 ballots were valid and 15 were invalid, bringing down the required majority of first preference votes to 377.
The NDA had the support of 427 MPs on paper, and YSRCP’s 11 lawmakers also voted for Radhakrishnan. But the NDA nominee got 14 more votes than their tally, leading to speculation of cross-voting by MPs from the opposition camp.
A total of 13 MPs abstained from voting in the Vice Presidential elections. The list includes seven MPs from Biju Janata Dal, four from Bharath Rashtra Samithi, one MP from Shiromani Akali Dal and one independent MP.
Congratulations pour in for Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan after he was declared the winner of the Vice President election. President Murmu congratulated him, expressing confidence that his decades of experience in public life will contribute to the nation’s progress.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him, saying that he is confident that the latter would be an outstanding leader, who will “strengthen our Constitutional values and enhance Parliamentary discourse.”
The Vice President’s post has been vacant since July 21, 2025, as Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his position, citing health reasons.
Who Is CP Radhakrishnan?
Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, who was serving as the 24th Governor of Maharashtra from July 31, 2024, before being announced as the NDA’s Vice Presidential nominee.
He previously served as the Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024. He also held additional charge as the Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry between March and July 2024.
