At least 10 people, including the suspected gunman, were wounded in a mass shooting in downtown Tucson, Arizona, early Sunday after a shooter opened fire in a crowded entertainment district, police said.According to the Tucson Police Department, officers on routine foot patrol heard gunfire around 2 am local time and rushed to the scene. They encountered the suspect, issued “repeated commands,” and then shot him, Reuters reported, citing Tucson Police department spokesperson Frank Magos.Police officers immediately rendered first aid to the suspect, who was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, Magos said during a media briefing near the scene. Before police arrived, nine other adults had been shot and were taken to hospitals. Many suffered gunshot wounds to their extremities and were reported to be in critical condition. No police officers were injured in the incident. Authorities have not officially disclosed what triggered the shooting.According to local broadcaster KGUN-TV, citing police sources, the shooting stemmed from a confrontation between two groups of people who knew each other, with several bystanders caught in the crossfire. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero said in a statement quoted by KGUN, “A shooter recklessly began shooting in a crowded area striking nine people before being stopped by a Tucson Police officer.””All victims were stabilized and taken to the hospital where we are hopeful they will all recover,” she added.Police said the suspect allegedly attempted to flee before being shot by a responding officer. His identity has not yet been released. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.More details awaited…
