Shekhar wants John Abraham as the next James Bond

Shekhar Kapur wants John Abraham as the next James Bond: ‘Why must Bond be a white British man?’

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has pitched John Abraham as the next James Bond, questioning why 007 must remain a “white British man.” Speaking to Variety India, Kapur praised Abraham’s effortless charisma and suave screen presence, saying he could deliver a “phenomenal Bond” if producers dare to take the franchise international.

Amid ongoing speculation over Daniel Craig’s successor as 007, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur believes the discussion shouldn’t be confined to Britain, or even the West more broadly. According to Kapur, John Abraham has the screen presence, restraint, and effortless charisma required to reimagine Bond for a new generation, much like how Craig redefined Ian Fleming’s iconic spy nearly two decades ago.

Shekhar Kapur on why Bond should reflect a ‘global reality’

With a fresh casting hunt now underway, Kapur feels the franchise finds itself at a similar juncture. Speaking to Variety India, he said, “I was reading reports that Eon Productions is currently hunting for the next actor to step into the tuxedo”. “And I thought to myself: Why must James Bond inherently be a white British man? Why are we still bound by that post-colonial paradigm? Why can’t the next iteration of the world’s greatest spy reflect our global reality? Why can’t he be Indian or Japanese?”.

Shekhar Kapur picks John Abraham as his instinctive choice

For Kapur, John Abraham stood out as an instinctive pick. “As I ran through international options, John Abraham immediately crystallized in my mind,” he said. “He naturally projects an incredibly rare, effortless coolness. He is deeply suave, and whenever he commands a frame on screen, he maintains a completely detached composure.”

Shekhar Kapur says John Abraham could deliver a ‘phenomenal Bond’

According to the filmmaker, these traits mirror what has traditionally defined Bond on screen: not just physical presence, but a quiet, understated confidence. “If the producers have the courage to take the franchise international,” Kapur added, “John Abraham could deliver a phenomenal Bond.” Go to Source
