Cybercrime incidents are surging across the country, with perpetrators continuously devising new methods to deceive unsuspecting citizens. A recent case from Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district highlights how quickly technology can be exploited to drain accounts.

According to reports, a young man, a yoga teacher by profession, lost over Rs 8.49 lakh from his bank account while attempting to pay a traffic challan. “The youth received a message on his mobile phone stating that a challan had been issued, although no such challan existed. Trusting the message, he entered his bank details, and immediately Rs 8.49 lakh vanished from his account,” sources said.

The incident occurred on September 3, when a traffic constable reportedly clicked a photo of a broken number plate. The victim then received an APK file on WhatsApp, accompanied by instructions to pay the challan. On clicking the file, the funds were withdrawn from his account at HDFC Bank’s Kalyanpur branch.

Following the loss, the victim lodged a complaint with the local police station. The cybercrime unit has since initiated an investigation.

Authorities have cautioned citizens about the growing sophistication of such scams. “These days, cyber fraudsters easily target innocent people. Sometimes in the name of digital arrest, sometimes in the name of investment, sometimes in the name of paying challan, sometimes they ask you to click on a link. In such a situation, you need to be careful. Please note that no police or investigation agency makes video calls nor sends any notice on WhatsApp or mail,” officials warned.

This incident serves as yet another reminder that vigilance is essential in the digital age, where a single click can lead to massive financial losses.
