Hair loss is often dismissed as a cosmetic inconvenience but it’s no longer just about saving strands, it’s about saving wellness

India’s first health-tech brand, Traya committed to providing solutions for hair loss has released its nationwide internal study on the root causes behind hair fall. For years, Indians have viewed hair loss as a cosmetic problem. But the truth is clearer than ever: hair loss is your body’s first SOS signal.

This white paper on hair health is based on anonymised data from over 400,000 individuals across the country. The report highlights internal causes such as sleep, stress, gut health, and overall energy levels as key determinants in India’s hair fall crisis.

Since August is observed as Hair Loss Awareness Month, the brand analysed data from more than 4 lakh Indians (3 lakh men and 1 lakh women) across metros, Tier-2 cities, and regions including North, South, East, West, and Central India. This marks India’s first city- and region-wise mapping of lifestyle factors directly linked to hair loss, showing that we are sleeping less, stressing more, eating in a rush, skipping essential nutrients, and running on empty energy levels. And what’s paying the price? Our hair.

Key Findings from 400,000+ Diagnostic Responses

Women are sleeping 6–8% less than men. This means every second woman you know is waking up tired, restless, and with more strands on her pillow.

South India reports the lowest sleep scores in the country. Men average just 59.6%, while women drop even lower at 53.5%, resulting in poor hair quality and early signs of hair loss and thinning.

Maharashtra shows high stress levels across genders, especially among women (16.1%). Hyderabad and Bengaluru also report high stress in both men and women.

Across metros, men and women are experiencing burnout symptoms that show up on their scalps before they recognise them mentally.

In cities like Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, women report 2x to 3.5x more stress-linked hair fall than men.

Tier-1 women consistently score lower on health markers than their Tier-2 counterparts, reflecting higher lifestyle strain.

Releasing the report,  Saloni Anand, co-founder, Traya said, “Hair loss is never just an external issue; it’s almost always rooted in internal factors like sleep, stress, gut health, lifestyle, and nutrition. Our internal research with 4 lakh customers reaffirms this, which is why at Traya we don’t just treat the scalp, we treat the whole person. With our doctor-led, science-backed approach that integrates the power of three sciences, we’ve seen results up to 3x better than most prescribed hair loss solutions.”

Why This Report Matters

The brand has access to data which is deep, real, and personal. And it’s telling us one thing loud and clear: hair fall is the first domino to fall when your body is struggling. Ignore it, and you’re ignoring your health.

The findings don’t just reveal numbers; they paint a real-life picture of how our modern, sedentary lifestyles are silently attacking our health. Hair loss is often dismissed as a cosmetic inconvenience but it’s no longer just about saving strands, it’s about saving wellness.
