The music world is mourning the loss of legendary singer S. Janaki who passed away on Saturday at the age of 88 at Mysuru. Known as “Janaki Amma” and the “Nightingale of South India” she is remembered for her incredible legacy in South India songs across multiple languages. She has been honoured with four National Awards and 33 State awards. But back in 2013 she decided not to accept the Padma Bhushan.

When S Janaki rejected the Padma Bhushan

Over 13 years ago, in 2013, the Government of India announced her name for the award before Republic Day that year. However, Janaki said the recognition had come too late in her life. She made it clear that she was not angry with the government but felt that her long contribution to Indian music deserved greater recognition.

The legendary singer said she deserved the Bharat Ratna

As per a report by The Hindu, after refusing the award, S Janaki explained why she took that decision. She said, “I am not finding fault with anyone for this late recognition. I have no grouse against the government. I was happy that the government has honoured me.” She also said, “I should have been given the highest civilian award of Bharat Ratna if the government wanted to recognise my work. I am not interested in any other awards like the Padma awards. ” The late veteran singer also felt that artists from South India deserved greater recognition for their work and contribution. For the unversed, S Janaki spent nearly five decades in the music industry and sang around 40,000 songs in 17 languages. She said, “After singing some 40,000 songs in 17 languages and getting four national and several state awards, I felt what they have given me now, after being in the field for 55 years, is too little. I think I deserve more, don’t I?”

S Janaki wanted artists to be honoured during their lifetime

S Janaki said it was important to honour artists while they were still alive. She added, “P. Leela was given a Padma award posthumously. Why can’t the Government recognise people’s contribution when they are alive?”Prominent persnoalities including Chiranjeevi, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Vijay, Boney Kapoor, and Trisha Krishnan shared their tributes online.
