A 45-year-old man accused of raping a 22-year-old woman escaped from police custody in Bulandshahr district after allegedly pushing a constable and receiving help from villagers, including the gram pradhan.

Police have booked more than 30 people for facilitating his escape, officials said.

The incident occurred on September 4 in Ahmedgarh village when police tried to arrest the accused, Mohd Afzal of Chehla village, in connection with a rape case registered against him on August 28.

Afzal had allegedly raped a woman on the pretext of marriage and had been evading arrest by hiding in local houses.

“Two constables in plain clothes managed to corner him on September 4. But as he was being taken out of a house, villagers confronted the team. Afzal then pushed one of the constables, leapt off the terrace, and fled,” SHO Premchand Sharma said.

Police said the villagers not only shielded the accused but also blocked the escape route by placing a tractor on a narrow road to delay the team’s movement.

A video of the incident, showing Afzal shoving a constable before fleeing, has since surfaced online.

An FIR has been lodged against 12 named persons, including village head Mohd Rouf, and 15–20 unidentified villagers under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of assaulting and obstructing public servants.

Bulandshahr SSP Dinesh Kumar Singh said multiple teams have been formed to trace Afzal. “We are investigating both the rape case and the circumstances of his escape. Strict action will be taken against those who helped him,” he said.

Some villagers, however, claimed the incident stemmed from confusion.

“The constables were in plainclothes, and some thought they were intruders. In the chaos, Afzal fled. We will cooperate with the probe, but innocent villagers should not be harassed,” said Adil Ali Khan, a local resident.

Police maintain the constables were posted at the local outpost and were known to several villagers.
