Khan, a habitual offender, has been involved in multiple cases. He used to pose as a police officer, allegedly abducting and extorting migrant labourers, threatening them with arrest, The Hindu reported.

According to a statement issued by the police commissioner’s office on Tuesday, the racket was came to light during a health awareness camp at the migrant colony in Varthur by Faiz Akram Pasha, founder of Karnataka State Janasadbhavana Samsthe. During the event, some of the victims approached him with their woes, following which he got a victim to lodge a complaint.

Deccan Herald quoted the complainant as saying that a group led by Khan had been calling up waste collectors such as Fatima Begum, Imran, Shamir and Mohammed Shah Alam, claiming to be police officers from the CCB and the Internal Security Division (ISD). They would then threaten their victims, and in some cases, even kidnap them to extort money.

Following the complaint, the police had arrested Nasir Khan on September 3. During his interrogation, the role of constable Prashant Navi came into light.

Previously working in the ISD in its Bengaluru unit, Navi is currently under suspension and posted to his parent unit in Bengaluru Rural. He was taken into custody on September 8 and reportedly confessed to his involvement in the crime. Both accused have been remanded to judicial custody, the statement added.
