CP Radhakrishnan Becomes India’s Next VP

NDA nominee C P Radhakrishnan on Tuesday won the Vice President election, defeating the opposition’s B Sudershan Reddy by a big margin of 152 votes.

As many as 452 lawmakers voted for Radhakrishnan in the election held on Tuesday.

767 MPs cast votes in the election, of which 15 were declared invalid. 788 members of the electoral college for the vice presidential election, since seven seats (6 seats in the Rajya Sabha and one in the Lok Sabha) are vacant.

The NDA had the support of 427 MPs on paper, and YSRCP’s 11 lawmakers also voted for Radhakrishnan. But the NDA nominee got 14 more votes than their tally, leading to speculation of cross-voting by MPs from the opposition camp.

Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Resignation

The election was necessitated after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President on July 21, the first day of the Parliament Monsoon Session, citing health reasons. Since his resignation, Dhankhar has kept out of the public eye.

Dhankhar, now 74, is entitled to Rs 42,000 pension per month, in addition to facilities such as medical care and travel allowance, officials said. The pension from the State Assembly payable to him will be in addition to the pension he will draw as the former Vice-President and an ex-MP.

He is the third vice-president in the country’s history who resigned before completing the term. VV Giri and R. Venkataraman left the post mid-term as they had to contest presidential elections. In his resignation letter, Dhankhar said he has to prioritise health care.
