‘He is a chameleon’: Coach Ferrero reveals how Alcaraz can change his game plan in minutes and succeed

Carlos Alcaraz’s coach Juan Carlos Ferrero praised him as a “chameleon” after his US Open 2025 win over Jannik Sinner. Alcaraz defeated Italy’s Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York to win his second US Open title.

Carlos Alcaraz’s coach Juan Carlos Ferrero has praised the star player after he lifted the US Open 2025 title on Sunday, September 7. Alcaraz defeated Italy’s Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, in front of a packed crowd, with US President Donald Trump also present.

Ferrero praises Alcaraz

Ferrero called Carlos Alcaraz a “chameleon” on the tennis court because of how quickly he can adapt to different situations during a match. Ferrero explained that the most special quality of Alcaraz is his ability to correct mistakes almost immediately.

“Carlos Alcaraz is chameleonic. You can ask him to do anything in a match, he adapts, and in the end he succeeds. The most incredible thing about Carlos is that he is so good at correcting in a very short time the small details that he must improve,” Ferrero said in the press conference after Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner in the final.

The coach also revealed that Alcaraz made changes in his game to prepare for Sinner after losing to the Italian at Wimbledon earlier this year. “In just 10 days he improved considerably,” Ferrero said. He further explained that they sat down to analyse the finals of French Open and Wimbledon to “try to see the little things that could be improved.”

Ferrero also compared the Alcaraz-Sinner rivalry to the famous battles between Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. “Right now it feels like that kind of rivalry. Who knows in the future,” he said.

Alcaraz lauds Sinner

Alcaraz had also shown his respect for rival Jannik Sinner on the court earlier in the evening. “I want to start with Jannik. It’s unbelievable what you’re doing the whole season; great level during every tournament that you’re playing… I’m seeing you more than my family,” Alcaraz said after the win.

“It’s great to share a court, to share the locker room, to share everything with you. I’m just really proud about the people I have around. Every achievement I’m having is because of you, thanks to you… This one is yours,” Alcaraz said as he thanked his team.
