‘Spat paan on Amitabh Bachchan’s shirt,’ Bindu says the actor thought of quitting Bollywood

'Spat paan on Amitabh Bachchan's shirt,' Bindu says the actor thought of quitting Bollywood: 'His films were flopping, Allahabad ka ticket wapas katwana padega'

Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan is known for his larger-than-life aura on-screen and off-screen both. While he may come across as intimidating to many, he’s always shared a great rapport with most of his co-stars. He’s shared friendship with many people in the industry for decades. In a recent interview, veteran actress Bindu has shared memories of working with him which also includes an embarrassing incident. Bindu who has worked with Bachchan in movies like ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Abhimaan’ and others recalled how she accidentally spat paan on his shirt.Bindu looked back on an incident that took place during an outdoor schedule in Rishikesh. After wrapping up work for the day, the cast and crew had travelled to Dehradun for dinner and were returning together when the mishap occurred. Bindu remembered enjoying a paan during the drive back while Amitabh Bachchan was seated behind her in the vehicle. With all the windows rolled down, she leaned out to spit without realising what would happen next. “I still remember that I had paan while coming back. And I was sitting in a way that the wind was in my face, and we were all driving with our windows rolled down. I put my head out of the window to spit out the paan, and the moment I spat it out, all of it landed on Amitabh’s shirt. I was so embarrassed, and I apologised profusely,” she recalled in an interview with Vickey Lalwani. For Bindu, the moment was mortifying. However, Bachchan reacted with his trademark calmness and assured her that it was no big deal. While he wasn’t upset, he certainly didn’t let her forget about it anytime soon.“He would pull my leg and laugh about this,” she recalled with a laugh. Among their many collaborations, one of the most memorable remains the classic ‘Abhimaan’. In the film, Bindu played a close confidante of Amitabh Bachchan’s character at a time when his marriage was facing turmoil. The role stood out in her career because it allowed her to move away from the vamp characters she was often associated with, even though her character could be perceived as the “other woman” in the story.”Hum Madra mein Gehri chaal ki shooting kar rahe the, tab hi se woh bohot acche artist the par unki filmein chal nahi rahi thi. We were coming by flight. Mere saath meri hair person thi, everyone knew her as she used to work with Helen ji. And then when we were talking, he would tell me my films are just flopping back-to-back. Pataa nai kya hoga, Allahabad ki ticket katwani padegi. My hairdresser said, ‘Don’t say that, everything will be all right’. Uske baad toh Zanjeer chal padi, Deewar chal padi. Usi darmyaan Abhimaan chal rahi thi.”
