‘Varanasi’: SS Rajamouli facing budget issues?

SS Rajamouli's 'Varanasi' facing budget issues? Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra starrer hit by OTT hurdle: Reports

Director SS Rajamouli’s ambitious globe-trotting adventure film ‘Varanasi’, is back in the headlines over a viral rumour related to its huge Rs 1,400 crore budget. The film, which is one of the most expensive movies ever made in India, starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles, has reportedly hit a hurdle over its production cost, according to industry reports.

‘Varanasi’ budget

While the makers have not officially commented on the film’s budget, a post on Always Bollywood and other entertainment news outlets have claimed that the current estimates circulating within the industry suggest that the project’s production cost could be in the range of Rs 1,200 crore to Rs 1,400 crore.

OTT hurdle for ‘Varanasi’

According to reports, the film’s original financial blueprint was developed during a period when the streaming market was booming. At the time, OTT platforms were shelling out between Rs 500 crore to Rs 600 crore to obtain digital rights for a marquee title of this scale. However, industry observers now note that the streaming landscape has changed considerably over the past few years. Trade sources suggest that major OTT platforms have become increasingly ‘selective’ with acquisitions and current valuations for even high-profile films may be closer to the Rs 150 crore to Rs 200 crore range. This has reportedly created fresh challenges for mega-budget productions. As a result, there is speculation that the makers are exploring ways to prevent costs from escalating further. As per the report, production schedules are now being altered in favour of more cost-effective alternatives, while still preserving the film’s large-scale visual appeal.

SS Rajamouli to opt for profit-sharing?

Reports have also claimed that Rajamouli may be willing to reduce his remuneration if required. However, trade analysts point out that the filmmaker’s compensation structure is believed to be linked to profit-sharing arrangements rather than a substantial upfront fee.It must be noted that these reports are currently unverified.’Varanasi ‘, which is currently in production, is slated to hit the big screens in April 2027.
