FB

Singer and actress Selena Gomez has spoken out after social media users speculated that a recent post was directed at her longtime friend Taylor Swift. The discussion began after Gomez shared a reaction to a recent NBA game. Some fans interpreted part of her message as a subtle jab at Taylor Swift leading to widespread debate online.Selena Gomez decided to clarify the situation through a series of Instagram Stories. The actress emphasized that her remarks had been taken out of context and insisted that she would never intentionally insult her friends.

Selena Gomez says she would never insult her friends

Responding to the online chatter, Selena Gomez explained the background behind her post and the reason she made the comment. She wrote, “Woke up and was sent so many texts. I would never insult my friends, nor was it an insult. The comment was a reaction to the first slide on the page. Second, I bet my friends on the game. The friends in the text chain I posted. I lost but was poking at my opponents, my friends. Believe it or not I do have other friends in my life. But quickly forget that most assume otherwise, also. It’s a basketball game.”

NBA post sparked the debate

The controversy stemmed from a post Selena Gomez shared following an NBA game in which the New York Knicks secured a dramatic 107-106 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. As reported by People, reacting to the match, Selena Gomez wrote, “Mad respect for the game!! Congrats to the peeps that represent! What a comeback. So funny how some are all of a sudden fans though lol.”The post included a screenshot of an article featuring several celebrities who attended the game. Among those pictured was Taylor Swift. Some users interpreted the phrase about “all of a sudden fans” as a reference to the ‘Blank Space’ singer.

Fans rally behind Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift

One Reddit user wrote, “This is so ridiculous, Taylor was just her bridesmaid, they’re not feuding over which basketball team they support people really need to get outside, even I’m not this chronically online, and I’m a big fan of both of them. Didn’t even know this was a situation.”Another commenter suggested that Gomez should be more cautious about social media interactions, writing, “Selena really needs a finista. With her level of fame she should just stick to posting professional posts online and she wouldn’t keep on having to make these follow up stories..”Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift have shared a close friendship for many years.Their bond was recently highlighted during Selena Gomez’s wedding celebrations with music producer Benny Blanco. Taylor Swift was among those who joined the festivities.
