Vrindavan, long regarded as a sacred site for Shri Krishna’s leelas since the Dwapar era, is a town where his name and stories echo through every corner. One of the most remarkable sights in Vrindavan is the Kadamba tree on the banks of the Yamuna River, which is believed to be 100 years older than Lord Krishna himself.

This ancient tree, though its branches have dried up, still has lush green leaves, a sight that fills devotees with a sense of blessing.

It is believed that Yamuna Maharani, regarded as the consort of Lord Krishna, once requested Krishna to purify her. In response, Krishna performed a leela, making the Yamuna pure. The Kadamba tree, now 5352 years old, witnessed Krishna’s playful ball leela near its branches.

This very spot, known as Cheer-Haran Ghat, is now called Cheer Ghat. It is believed that here, Krishna famously performed the Chir Haran Leela, playfully stealing the clothes of the bathing Gopis and tying them to tree branches, later returning them while teaching the Gopis the decorum of bathing.

The tradition of donating clothes at Cheer Ghat continues to this day. Devotees believe that tying a cloth on the branches of the Kadamba tree ensures their home will never lack clothes and food. Many come to this sacred ghat, make their wishes, and upon their fulfilment, donate according to their faith and capacity.

The legend of Krishna’s Chir Haran Leela holds that the Gopis of Braj used to bathe openly in the Yamuna, causing discomfort to the river’s creatures, who expressed their plight to Maharani Yamuna.

It is believed that in response, she sought Krishna’s intervention, leading to his orchestrating the leela to teach the Gopis a lesson in modesty. This timeless tale continues to draw devotees to Vrindavan, where they seek blessings and the fulfilment of their wishes at Cheer Ghat.
