Prithviraj’s old interview resurfaces amid Janhvi’s ‘Peddi’ portrayal

Peddi backlash grows as Jaya Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor question objectification in cinema

The intense national discourse surrounding female objectification in Indian cinema has hit a new peak following the release of Ram Charan’s sports-drama ‘Peddi.’ Despite the film crossing the staggering Rs. 300 crore milestone globally, a massive wave of backlash targeting the portrayal and camera framing of Janhvi Kapoor’s character, Achiyamma, forced director Buchi Babu Sana to issue a public apology and promise significant edits. Amidst this heated debate, old remarks by actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran regarding women’s representation and the “male gaze” have resurfaced online, drawing sharp comparisons to the ongoing industry controversy.

Prithviraj called for a different perspective in cinema

Speaking about one of his earlier films, Prithviraj explained that cinema often presents women as visual attractions. As reported by Madhyamam, he said the intention behind the film was to offer a different point of view. “Indian cinema usually objectifies women. We wanted to show that women can also desire men and look at them in that way,” he said. The actor added that stories should not always be told through a male perspective alone. His comments highlighted the importance of giving women greater agency and representation on screen.

Actor reflected on his own film choices

Prithviraj also admitted that he had been part of films in the past that contained problematic portrayals of women. However, he made it clear that his outlook had changed with time. “I have acted in films that can be called misogynistic, but I do not want to do such roles anymore,” he said. The actor further stated that he would avoid characters that normalize unhealthy relationships. “I don’t want to be part of stories where a hero behaves badly towards a woman, and she still falls in love with him,” he added. This statement was viewed as an expression of his changing perception regarding responsible storytelling.

Discussion on women’s portrayal remains relevant

‘Peddi’ is a sports action drama directed by Buchi Babu Sana and stars Ram Charan in the lead role alongside Janhvi Kapoor, Shiva Rajkumar, Jagapathi Babu, Divyenndu, and Boman Irani. ‘Peddi’ has faced criticism from a section of viewers over the way Janhvi Kapoor’s character was portrayed in the film. Many objected to certain camera shots and a scene involving a non-consensual kiss, calling them inappropriate and outdated. Go to Source
