A major political stir has emerged in Madhya Pradesh ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, with the Congress party initiating a protective strategy to prevent potential cross-voting and defections among its legislators. According to party sources, Congress is preparing to shift its MLAs from Madhya Pradesh to Karnataka, where the party is currently in power, as a precautionary measure amid heightened political uncertainty. The development comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surprised political observers by fielding three candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections, while Congress nominated senior leader Meenakshi Natarajan. With three Rajya Sabha seats up for election and four candidates in the fray, the contest has intensified significantly. The current strength of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly stands at 229 members. Based on the electoral arithmetic, each candidate requires 58 votes to secure victory. The BJP commands 164 MLAs, while Congress has 64 legislators, indicating that Congress should comfortably secure one seat on paper. However, the BJP’s decision to field an additional candidate has triggered concerns within the opposition camp over possible cross-voting or political maneuvering. Congress leaders have accused the BJP of attempting to influence legislators and derail the party’s chances of sending Meenakshi Natarajan to the Upper House. The party has framed the contest as a battle of political ideology and democratic values, asserting that it will remain united throughout the election process. With both parties closely monitoring every move, the Rajya Sabha election in Madhya Pradesh is shaping up to be a high-stakes political showdown, drawing national attention and setting the stage for intense political calculations in the days ahead.
