Chaos erupted in Gurugram’s DLF Phase 2 on Sunday as scores of aggrieved homebuyers gathered outside the residence of builder Sikandar Chhokar, son of former Congress MLA Dharam Singh Chhokar. Residents carried placards and raised slogans, accusing the builder of cheating them of their dream homes even after seven long years.

The protestors alleged that Mahira Homes, led by Sikandar Chhokar, had launched an affordable housing project in Sector 68 nearly seven years ago, promising possession to more than 1,500 buyers. However, the construction never even began. “We invested our entire life savings, but to this day, the land lies barren,” said one of the protestors.

The case has already drawn the attention of enforcement agencies. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had earlier arrested both Sikandar Chhokar and his father, Dharam Singh Chhokar, in a money laundering case linked to the housing scam. But both secured bail, sparking fresh anger among the buyers.

Adding to their frustration, the buyers blamed the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) for what they described as a “lax approach” that has only weakened their fight for justice. Many of them now find themselves in dire financial straits, paying EMIs for flats that do not exist while also shelling out rent for temporary housing.

“The government must intervene. We cannot keep suffering like this. If we are not given our flats, then allow euthanasia,” read one banner held up during the protest.

Mahira Homes has at least five projects pending across Gurugram, leaving thousands of families stranded. Buyers demanded that the government immediately take over these projects to ensure construction is completed and justice delivered.
