Hyundai Motor India on Thursday said it will make Tamil Nadu its flagship electric vehicle (EV) hub in the country, while increasing localisation levels and expanding investments in manufacturing, supply chains and workforce development.

The automaker said it plans to launch two new models from its Chennai plant this year, including its first mass-market dedicated EV. Hyundai has already set up a battery sub-assembly facility in Tamil Nadu and is working to localise key EV components, including power electronics.

“Alongside advancing EV localisation, we are equally focused on developing a future-ready skilled workforce, enabling talent to support future automotive technologies,” said Tarun Garg, MD and; CEO – HMIL.

Localisation and jobs

Hyundai aims to increase localisation across its EV and internal combustion engine (ICE) operations from 82 per cent to 90 per cent over the next five to six years.

The company also plans to increase sourcing from Tamil Nadu-based suppliers by about ₹4,000 crore, a move expected to create around 2,000 jobs.

The company, in partnership with the Tamil Nadu government, will launch a skill development programme focused on EVs, hydrogen mobility, robotics, automation and AI-enabled manufacturing. The initiative is scheduled to begin operations in December 2027.

The carmaker reiterated its commitment to invest more than ₹26,000 crore in Tamil Nadu between 2023 and 2032, as part of its broader expansion plans aimed at strengthening the state’s position as a major automotive and EV manufacturing hub.
