Ruben Amorim sack verdict made by ex-Man United scout as fans question manager’s future

What will happen to Ruben Amorim if Manchester United lose to Manchester City and Chelsea? A former Manchester United chief scout has delivered his verdict on the manager’s future.

Ruben Amorim faces a make-or-break period after the international break as Manchester United’s next two matches are against Manchester City and Chelsea in the English Premier League. Two negative results could be disastrous for the Portuguese manager Amorim, who is already facing the ire of the fans after a poor start to the season. But a former Man United chief scout feels Amorim’s job is safe for now.

That’s a huge vote of confidence in the 40-year-old tactician who suffered a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the 2025-26 league opener and saw his team play out a drab draw against Fulham before being knocked out of the League Cup after a 12-11 penalty shootout defeat to Grimsby Town in the second round.

United’s only win in the season came at Burnley before the international break as Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty in injury time to help the Red Devils secure a 3-2 victory.

Man United had a tough time in the league under Amorim, winning just eight matches in 30 games. After they spent over £200 million on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, fans expected a turnaround in the new season, but the Red Devils have once again looked like a team struggling or identity and cohesiveness.

The pressure from the fans are growing and there’s a belief that poor results against City and Chelsea, two top teams, could go against Amorim, but former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown, who worked at the club under the great Sir Alex Ferguson, feels Amorim is set to continue to the club even if he fails to win the next two tough games.

In a no-holds-barred interview, Brown said that Amorim is failing to inspire confidence due to a string of poor results in the new seasons and the victory over Burnley would not help much.

“A win is a win, at the end of the day,” Brown told Football Insider. “But I don’t think anybody will take confidence in the manager from a 3-2 win when you’ve dominated the game and end up relying on a penalty in the last minute.

“It’s not the type of result which makes you think they’ll be able to build on it. That is what he needs to do; he needs to put a string of results together and maintain their form.”

“They need to continue winning games, that’s how you ease the pressure,” he added.

Brown, however, added that Amorim will not be sacked if Unite lose to City and Chelsea.

“After the international break, it’s Man City and then they’ve got Chelsea after that, so it won’t get easier,” Brown said. “It’s very easy to start the season and before you know where you are, you’ve lost three or four games and all of a sudden you’re tumbling down the table.

“At the moment, he’s just papering over the cracks, but a win against Burnley isn’t enough to convince people you’ve turned a corner. Those Man City and Chelsea games are going to be big for him.

“I don’t necessarily think they’ll sack him even if he loses those games, because at this point it’s to be expected, but more questions will be asked.”
