India witnessed the year’s second and final lunar eclipse on Sunday. Not only was it a total eclipse, but it was also the biggest since 2022, and it was visible across the country. From a scientific lens, an eclipse is purely an astronomical event with no connection to death or funerary practices. Yet, cultural traditions often prompt families to wait until the eclipse ends before performing such rituals.

Among Hindus, the period of ‘Sutak’—the inauspicious hours during an eclipse—is strictly observed as the celestial event unfolds.

This year, the eclipse coincided with the beginning of Pitru Paksha, rendering it inauspicious. Adding to that, the ‘Mrityu Panchak’— a five-day period considered dangerous in astrology—began on September 6 and continues till September 10. Since the eclipse overlapped with Mrityu Panchak, it is believed to carry greater negative energy.

This raises a sensitive question: What if someone passes away during a lunar eclipse? How should the last rites be performed?

What Is Mrityu Panchak?

Astrology mentions different types of Panchak (five-day periods), such as Raj Panchak, Agni Panchak and Mrityu Panchak. Among them, Mrityu Panchak is seen as the most dangerous.

This year, it runs from September 6, 11:21 AM to September 10, 4:03 PM. During this phase, performing auspicious activities is avoided.

What If There’s A Death During The Eclipse?

According to religious traditions, an eclipse is an inauspicious and sensitive time. Weddings, rituals, and religious ceremonies are strictly avoided.

Traditionally, in the Hindu community, last rites are not performed during a lunar eclipse.

Scriptures say that during this time, the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, space) are considered impure. Hence, families usually wait until the eclipse ends. If somebody dies during the eclipse, then –

  • The body should be covered in clean cloth and kept in a safe place.
  • Family members may chant prayers or God’s name near the body.
  • Once the eclipse ends, the body is bathed, and the funeral procession begins.

If circumstances make it impossible to wait, last rites may be performed during the eclipse. In such cases, additional rituals are done later—such as lunar worship and peace prayers on the 12th day after death—to ensure the departed soul attains peace.
