At least four people drowned, and 13 others went missing during Ganesh idol immersions across multiple districts of Maharashtra, police said on Sunday.

In Pune district’s Chakan area, four individuals were swept away in separate incidents, said officials aware of the development.

“Two men were swept away in the Bhama river at Waki Khurd and another one at Shell Pimpalgaon. Another person slipped into a well at Birwadi in Pune rural,” an official said.

He added that while two bodies had been recovered, search operations were underway for the other two.

In the Nanded district, three people were swept away in a river at Gadegaon. “One of them was later rescued, and a search was on for the other two persons,” police said.

Nashik also reported multiple casualties, with four people drowning during immersion processions. The body of one victim was recovered in Sinnar, officials confirmed.

Three more immersion-related mishaps occurred in Jalgaon, where police said efforts were on to trace the missing.

In Thane district, three individuals were carried away by strong currents, and one body has been recovered so far. In Amravati, a man was feared drowned during the ritual, according to police.

Heavy rainfall across several parts of Maharashtra has swollen rivers and water bodies, compounding the risks during immersions.

State disaster response teams and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to assist with search and rescue operations, officials said.

Ganesh Chaturthi, Maharashtra’s biggest festival, is celebrated on a massive scale with over 75,000 public pandals (mandals) and lakhs of household idols installed across the state each year.

Mumbai alone witnesses more than 12,000 community idols, including the iconic Lalbaugcha Raja, which draws millions of devotees daily.
