The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several districts of Gujarat, warning of heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours. The downpour, triggered by a low-pressure system, has already led to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupted normal life.

The IMD issued a weather alert for Gujarat and Rajasthan amid “a well-marked low-pressure area over Southwest Rajasthan and neighbourhood”, which moved westwards and concentrated into a depression over South Rajasthan and adjoining North Gujarat.

Meanwhile, orange alerts are in place for other states, including Maharashtra and Goa.

Rivers across the state, including the Narmada, Tapi, and Sabarmati, are witnessing a sharp rise in water levels due to continuous inflow from catchment areas.

In Gujarat, Subhanpura, Tarsali, and residential complexes of Vadsar witnessed rampant waterlogging on September 6 following heavy rains. The civic authorities shut a patch of the Koteshwar Road due to the rising water levels of the Vishwamitri River in Vadodara, Indain Express reported.

Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious, while disaster response teams have been put on alert.

Rajasthan Rains

Heavy to very heavy rain continued to lash parts of Rajasthan, with the Jaipur Meteorological Centre on Sunday issuing a warning of more intense showers in parts of the state.

According to the weather office, under a well-marked low-pressure area over the southern part of the state, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated places during the past 24 hours.

Officials said the highest rainfall of 210 mm was recorded at Sanchore in Jalore district, news agency PTI reported.

For Sunday, the MeT office has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph in Jalore, Sirohi, Barmer, Balotra, Udaipur and adjoining districts. Extremely heavy rain is also likely to occur in one or two places, it added.

The department further said heavy rainfall activity may continue in Barmer, Jalore, and Jaisalmer districts on September 8.
