A cloudburst incident was reported in Yamuna Valley in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Saturday, causing substantial damage in the Naugaon area. Due to the impact of the cloudburst, debris buried a residential house, and muddy waters from a stream flooded over half a dozen homes.

According to District Magistrate Prashant Arya, the cloudburst occurred at Syori Phal Patti in Yamuna Valley during the evening, with sludge from the flooded stream wreaking havoc in low-lying areas.

The district administration, along with state and national disaster response forces, has initiated rescue operations in the affected area. Those impacted are being relocated to safer locations, news agency PTI reported, citing the DM.

However, there were no immediate reports of any casualties.

It is learnt that at the time of the cloudburst, many residents had already evacuated their homes due to the heavy rain forecast in the region.

Meanwhile, the swollen Devalsari stream reportedly swept away a mixer machine and several two-wheelers. Additionally, a car was buried under the debris.

A mudslide created chaos in Naugaon’s market area, prompting people to flee for safety. It also led to closure of the Delhi-Yamunotri highway, resulting in traffic snarls.

The State Disaster Response Force team (SDRF) promptly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue and relief efforts. They successfully evacuated the locals to secure locations.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, in a Facebook post, stated, “On receiving information about the damage caused by heavy rains in Naugaon area of Uttarkashi district, I immediately spoke to the district magistrate and directed him to conduct rescue and relief operations on a war footing.”

He added, “I have also clearly instructed to immediately take the affected people to safe places and ensure that there is no delay in providing all possible help. I pray to God for everyone’s safety,” Dhami wrote.
