Anne Hathaway opens up about decade-long vision struggle

Anne Hathaway talks about her early onset of cataract: 'I was half blind for 10 years'

Anne Hathaway recently opened up about a decade-long struggle with her vision that left her legally blind in one eye. The actress, 43, made the revelation for the first time publicly, speaking candidly about the condition and the surgery that ultimately restored her sight. Her comments quickly caught the attention of fans and media alike, making headlines around the world.Last month, during an appearance on The New York Times’ podcast ‘Popcast’, she told hosts Jon Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli about her experience. “This is maybe too much information,” she quipped before sharing her story. “I was half blind for 10 years.”

According to Hathaway, she had an early onset of cataract from ages 30 to 40, a condition that caused her vision to deteriorate significantly. The condition affected her vision “so much that I was basically legally blind out of my left eye,” she said, adding that it caused her considerable stress. “I wound up getting surgery,” she shared. “And I didn’t realise how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum.”She also revealed that the condition was affecting her more broadly than she had realised. “I’ve calmed down since then. I didn’t realise it was actually taxing my nervous system,” she added.

Following the procedure, Hathaway said she developed a deep appreciation for her sight. “I appreciate vision because I literally feel like every day, I wake up, and I get to see the way that I do, it’s a miracle,” she said. “I actually am like, ‘Oh, two generations back, that wouldn’t have been an option for someone like me.’ So, I actually do feel very connected to that kind of a miracle.”

Anne Hathaway on plastic surgery rumours

Hathaway has also been candid about other aspects of her health in recent weeks. In an interview with Elle published on Thursday, May 21, she addressed rumours surrounding whether she has undergone recent plastic surgery, sharing that she generally has a preference to never comment on such speculation.”We’re at a time when people feel very confident in assuming what they think is fact, and sometimes what they think is accurate and sometimes it’s not,” she said. “The speculation has gotten so loud that you do feel the need to just get your truth out there.”She also pushed back on the nature of the assumptions being made. “These are huge medical decisions that people are presuming. I wanted to show that, like, no, I didn’t make a huge medical decision. It’s just two braids,” she said, referring to a tutorial she had shared for achieving a lifted look through a braided hairstyle. She then added with characteristic candour, “By the way, the other thing about all this is, I might still get a facelift someday.”On the work front, Hathaway was most recently seen in ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ and is next set to appear in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated ‘The Odyssey’, due on July 17.
