A planned dinner for National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Members of Parliament at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence has been cancelled due to the severe flooding affecting several parts of northern India, sources confirmed on Saturday.

The event, originally scheduled for September 8, was intended as a gathering of NDA leaders ahead of the Vice Presidential elections. However, considering the ongoing devastation caused by heavy rains and floods, especially in Punjab and neighbouring states, the dinner was called off.

A similar dinner event, planned for the same evening at the residence of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president and Union Minister JP Nadda, has also been cancelled.

According to officials, the decision comes in light of the tragic impact of the monsoon across multiple states. President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep concern on Friday over the destruction caused by intense rainfall, cloudbursts, and flash floods in several regions.

In a post on X, President Murmu wrote, “Cloudbursts in the hills and floods in the plains have taken a heavy toll, leaving death and destruction in their wake in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Assam and many other parts of the country.”

The President also offered support to affected communities and praised the efforts of emergency personnel involved in rescue and relief work.

In Punjab alone, the official flood death toll has reached 43, with damage reported across at least 14 districts. Himachal Pradesh has seen over 300 rain-related deaths this year, while rising water levels in the Yamuna River forced evacuations in Delhi.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall between 1 and 5 September was unusually high in multiple states, with Himachal recording 948 mm, Delhi 719.5 mm, and Assam 826.6 mm.

With large areas of farmland submerged and critical infrastructure damaged, several state governments have sought urgent financial assistance for recovery efforts.
