Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke to French President Emmanuel Macron, where the two leaders reviewed the progress in bilateral cooperation and discussed efforts to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

“Had a very good conversation with President Macron. We reviewed and positively assessed the progress in bilateral cooperation in various areas,” PM Modi said on X. “Exchanged views on international and regional issues, including efforts for bringing an early end to the conflict in Ukraine. The India-France Strategic Partnership will continue to play a key role in fostering global peace and stability.”

This came two days after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asserted that India has a crucial role to play in pressing Russia to end its war in Ukraine and shaping a path towards peace.

“We warmly welcome India’s continued engagement with President Zelenskyy. India has an important role to play in bringing Russia to end its war of aggression and helping create a path towards peace,” said von der Leyen.

Prime Minister Modi has been in touch with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and has repeatedly called for dialogue and diplomacy to end the deadliest war in Europe since World War II.

As PM Modi visited Putin at the SCO Summit in Tianjin, China, last month, he spoke to Zelenskyy about the war in Ukraine and prospects for peace. After the call, Zelenskyy posted on social media that India was prepared to deliver “the appropriate signal to Russia and other leaders” during the summit.

This was the second telephonic conversation between PM Modi and Zelenskyy this month. On August 11, PM Modi and Zelenskyy had a similar conversation, where the former reaffirmed New Delhi’s steadfast and consistent position for the peaceful settlement of the ongoing conflict. PM Modi also reiterated the same message to Putin during an earlier call.
