'Sherlock Holmes' actor David Burke passes away at 91

David Burke, the acclaimed actor renowned for his role as Dr. Watson in the 1980s show ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ in the first season, passed away at the age of 91 on May 10, 2026. His agent, Scott Marshall Partners, announced his demise on Friday, adding that the late star is survived by his wife Anna Calder-Marshall and son Tom Burke. The reason has not been revealed yet by the family.

About David Burke’s prolific career and family

Born on May 15, 1934, David Burke became a celebrated actor with his unmatched skills. Beginning his distinguished career at the prestigious acting school, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), he starred in the production of ‘King Lear’ at the National Theatre, along with the Lord of the Rings star Ian Holm. With an abundance of talent, Burke was featured in the cherished series ‘Midsomer Murders,’ which has been one of the longest-running shows on television, according to The Mirror.In the 1980s, the late actor starred as Dr. Watson in the first season of ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,’ who was soon replaced by the late Edward Hardwicke, alongside Jeremy Brett in the titular role. Burke’s work extends with roles in ‘Reilly, Ace of Spies,’ ‘The Woman in Black,’ ‘The Rivals,’ ‘Bertie and Elizabeth,’ ‘The Man Who Saw Tomorrow,’ and many more. Burke reportedly felt ‘terribly guilty’ for leaving his wife and son alone while filming for the Sherlock Holmes series in Manchester, turning down the opportunity to star in the second season, as per The Times newspaper.Following in the footsteps of David Burke, his son, Tom Burke, starred in the popular series ‘The Musketeers.’ While he recently landed a role alongside Steve Coogan in a show, Tom is also known for his portrayal of Cormoran Strike in the series ‘Strike.’
