Delhi Terror: Driver and Helper Held After Mother of Three Gang-Raped on Private Bus

The recent gang-rape of a mother of three inside a private sleeper bus has sent shockwaves through Delhi, once again exposing severe lapses in women’s safety within the national capital’s transport system. The incident, which reportedly occurred on May 12, involved the very individuals responsible for the vehicle’s operation—the driver and the conductor. The victim, a married woman, alleged that she was forcibly pulled into the sleeper compartment of the private bus. Once the vehicle was secured, the driver and conductor allegedly took turns sexually assaulting her. Following the attack, the victim displayed immense courage by reporting the matter to the police, who responded with immediate urgency. Both the accused driver and conductor have been apprehended and are currently undergoing interrogation. An FIR was promptly registered following a medical examination that confirmed the assault. Furthermore, the private sleeper bus has been seized and impounded, and forensic experts are currently processing the vehicle for DNA evidence and fingerprints to build a robust legal case. This case has reignited a fierce public debate regarding the regulation of private bus operators, with critics pointing to the lack of oversight in sleeper-class coaches. There are now urgent calls for mandatory GPS tracking and CCTV in all private commercial vehicles, stricter background verification for transport staff, and increased police patrolling in transit hubs late at night. As the investigation continues, this tragedy serves as a grim reminder that despite past reforms, the struggle for a safe commuting environment for women in Delhi remains a critical challenge for law enforcement and policymakers alike.
