This weekend, Mumbaikars can witness a rare celestial event as a total lunar eclipse or the “Blood Moon” on September 7-8. During this rare celestial event, the Earth will pass directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on the lunar surface and giving it a striking red-orange glow.

The eclipse will be the longest visible one for India this year, lasting more than four and a half hours, with the Blood Moon phase creating a dramatic red glow across the night sky. Parts of Europe, Africa, eastern Australia, and New Zealand will also catch a glimpse of the event.

When To Watch

Nehru Planetarium Director Arvind Paranjpye said that the eclipse will begin at 8:58 PM IST on Sunday, September 7. The totality phase, during which the Moon will appear a deep red, will begin at 11:00 PM and last until 12:22 AM on Monday, September 8, with the eclipse ending at 1:30 AM.

“The eclipse will be fully visible across India, and in Mumbai, it will be one of the best opportunities to observe a total lunar eclipse in recent years,” said Paranjpye.

Why Is It Called ‘Blood Moon’?

A lunar eclipse happens when Earth positions itself between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow on the lunar surface. The Moon passes through Earth’s umbral shadow (the dark inner part), causing it to dim and turn red. The reddish-orange hue, commonly known as the Blood Moon effect, occurs because Earth’s atmosphere scatters shorter blue light while redirecting the longer red wavelengths onto the Moon. The result is a dramatic celestial show visible without any special equipment.

Best Spots In Mumbai

In Mumbai, the Moon will appear high in the sky, allowing it to be seen from most locations as long as the weather stays clear. Ideal viewing spots include rooftops, terraces, open grounds, Marine Drive, Girgaon Chowpatty, and parks away from city lights. For the best experience, observers are advised to steer clear of areas with heavy light pollution.

Where To Watch In India

This will be one of the most widely visible eclipses in recent years, observable from any location on Earth’s night side with clear skies. While much of North and South America will miss out, nearly 85% of the global population will be able to witness at least a portion of it.

North India: Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow

West India: Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune

South India: Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi

East India: Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati

Central India: Bhopal, Nagpur, Raipur

The Moon will appear high above the horizon, making it easy to see. The best views can be enjoyed from rooftops, terraces, open fields, or parks away from city lights. To experience it fully, steer clear of areas with light pollution.
