Historic Spectacle: Air Show, Dhwajarohan Mark Grand Somnath Kumbh Abhishek Ceremony

A spiritually charged and visually spectacular celebration unfolded at Somnath Temple as Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the historic Kumbh Abhishek ceremony, followed by a grand Dhwajarohan ritual and a breathtaking Indian Air Force air show over the temple skies. For the first time in Somnath’s history, the temple witnessed a ceremonial Shikhar Kumbh Abhishek alongside an aerial tribute by the Indian Air Force’s famed Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team. Moments after the sacred rituals and flag hoisting ceremony, fighter aircraft painted the skies in the colors of the Indian tricolor, creating an emotional and patriotic atmosphere amid chants of “Har Har Mahadev.” Religious leaders present at the ceremony described the occasion as spiritually historic and emotionally overwhelming. Mahamandaleshwar Swami Vedmurti Saraswati stated that the Dhwajarohan ritual symbolizes the completion of sacred consecration ceremonies and represents the revival of divine glory at Somnath. The celebrations also highlighted the temple’s long and turbulent history. Somnath, one of Hinduism’s holiest shrines, faced repeated invasions and destruction over centuries, including attacks by Mahmud of Ghazni, Alauddin Khilji, and Aurangzeb. Yet the temple repeatedly rose again through reconstruction efforts led by devotees and leaders including Ahilyabai Holkar and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel after Independence. The air show carried symbolic significance, representing both India’s cultural pride and modern military strength. During the display, aircraft formations created a heart symbol in the sky, reflecting the Prime Minister’s recent remarks that Somnath “lives forever in the hearts of Indians.” The event blended spirituality, history, patriotism, and national pride, presenting Somnath as a symbol of resilience, civilization, and the spirit of a modern yet culturally rooted India.
