LUNAR ECLIPSE DOS AND DON’T: The Moon has always fascinated people, and when an eclipse takes place, it becomes even more special. A lunar eclipse, also known as Chandra Grahan, happens when the Earth comes directly between the Sun and the Moon, blocking sunlight from reaching the Moon. This creates a rare celestial event that has long been considered significant in both science and tradition.

This year’s last total lunar eclipse will occur on Sunday, September 7, when the Moon will pass through the Aquarius zodiac sign.

While astronomers focus on the beauty and rarity of the eclipse, many cultures also attach spiritual and health-related beliefs to it. In Hindu traditions, special precautions are suggested, particularly for pregnant women, to safeguard their well-being and that of their unborn child.

A lunar eclipse takes place when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align in a straight line, with Earth casting its shadow over the Moon. Depending on the alignment, the Moon may be partially or fully covered. While astronomers view this as a natural event, many cultures attach symbolic meaning to it.

In Hindu beliefs, eclipses are associated with Rahu and Ketu, shadow planets said to affect mental and physical health. It is often advised that people with health conditions, as well as expectant mothers, should be extra cautious.

Many of these customs, passed down through generations, aim at minimising risks during the eclipse period.

What Do The Beliefs Advise Pregnant Women?

  1. Take rest and avoid doing any heavy work during this period.
  2. Pregnant women are advised not to sleep until the eclipse ends.
  3. Avoid stepping outside during the eclipse and remain indoors.
  4. Do not eat or drink during the eclipse, especially food prepared beforehand.
  5. Chanting mantras or prayers like the Bhagavad Gita, Hanuman Chalisa, or Shiva Chalisa is recommended for peace of mind.
  6. If chanting isn’t possible, reading holy texts can also bring comfort.
  7. Some traditions suggest keeping a coconut filled with water in the lap during this time.
  8. Avoid handling sharp objects during the eclipse.
  9. Above all, maintaining a calm and positive environment is considered important.

The Possible Effects Of A Lunar Eclipse On Pregnancy

According to Hindu belief, the Moon represents motherhood, which is why lunar eclipses are linked more strongly with pregnant women. It is said that eclipses may bring unseen disturbances, so precautionary measures are advised.

While modern science does not confirm these claims, many families still follow traditional practices as a way of being extra careful.

Ultimately, these customs reflect cultural wisdom that values the safety of both mother and child. Even without scientific backing, the idea of taking precautions during such celestial events continues to remain important in many Indian households.
