A woman was shot dead, allegedly by her husband, in a crowded market in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur after a dispute over their divorce proceedings, the police said.

The man was identified as Vishwakarma Chauhan who was held from the spot soon after the crime took place in the Shahpur area on Wednesday evening.

He told the police during interrogation that he had “no regret” for what he had done as she was “eating away his money”, the cops said.

The victim woman, identified as Mamta Chauhan (35), who worked in a private firm and used to live separately with her 13-year-old daughter, was demanding child support and the transfer of a farmland before their divorce proceedings could proceed, the police said.

According to the eyewitnesses on the crime scene, the couple engaged in a heated argument outside a photo studio around 7:30 pm on Wednesday. The man pulled out a pistol and fired two shots – one of which hit the wife in her chest and the other in her arm.

She was rushed to a hospital, where she was declared dead.

Their daughter later told the police in a complaint that her father was involved in harassment and extramarital affairs.

Confirming the arrest, Circle Officer (Gorakhnath) Ravi Kumar Singh said, “The couple’s divorce proceedings were underway. A preliminary probe suggests that the murder was triggered by financial disputes. The source of the pistol is also being investigated.”
