Former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar has sought the resumption of his pension from the Rajasthan Assembly as a former legislator, news agency PTI reported, citing the officials.

Dhankhar, who represented the Kishangarh Assembly constituency as a Congress MLA from 1993 to 1998, received a pension as a former legislator until July 2019. It was discontinued after he was appointed the governor of West Bengal.

Over a month after stepping down as the Vice-President, citing “health issues”, Dhankhar has now applied to the State Assembly Secretariat seeking pension as a former MLA.

The secretariat has initiated the process, and the pension will be applicable from the date his resignation as the vice-president was accepted, officials said.

The MLAs in Rajasthan who have served a full term are entitled to get the pension of ₹35,000 per month, which goes up with additional terms and age. Those above 70 years of age receive a 20% hike.

Dhankhar, now 74, is entitled to Rs 42,000 pension per month, in addition to facilities such as medical care and travel allowance, officials said. The pension from the State Assembly payable to him will be in addition to the pension he will draw as the former Vice-President and an ex-MP.

Dhankhar resigned as the Vice President on July 21, citing health grounds. His sudden resignation came on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament, which concluded on August 21.

An election to pick his successor is scheduled to take place on September 9.

In the vice-presidential election, NDA pick CP Radhakrishnan, the Governor of Maharashtra, is pitted against opposition nominee B Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge.

Dhankhar’s term as the Vice President was to end on August 10, 2027.

He is the third vice-president in the country’s history who resigned before completing the term. VV Giri and R. Venkataraman left the post mid-term as they had to contest presidential elections. In his resignation letter, Dhankhar said he has to prioritise health care.
