A man in Karnataka was arrested for allegedly killing his daughter over her relationship with a man from a different community, said police. The incident is said to have taken place on Thursday in Melakunda village in Kalaburagi district.

The accused father has been identified as Shankar.

Shankar allegedly strangled his daughter and forced pesticide into her mouth to pass off the death as a suicide, which the villagers believed and participated in the last rites, news agency PTI reported, citing Kalaburagi Police Commissioner Sharanappa S D.

It is learnt that cops received reports that an 18-year-old girl had died by suicide and her last rites had been performed, though the circumstances raised suspicions, Sharanappa said.

“The jurisdictional police received information that an 18-year-old girl died by suicide and her last rites were performed, but there were suspicions about the case,” PTI quoted the Police Commissioner as saying.

Upon investigation, local police confirmed the details and arrested the victim’s father. The CP revealed that Shankar opposed his daughter’s relationship, fearing it would impact the marriage prospects of his other three daughters.

“The man had opposed her relationship, as he has five daughters. He feared that an inter-caste marriage would affect the marriage prospects of his other three daughters,” Sharanappa added.

A forensic team also collected evidence, and police filed charges of murder and evidence tampering. Police suspect two more people were involved in the apparent honour killing.

“We suspect the involvement of two more people, who are Shankar’s relatives. Investigations are ongoing, and if found guilty, they will be arrested as well,” PTI quoted the CP as saying.
