US President Donald Trump has withdrawn the extended Secret Service protection granted to former Vice President Kamala Harris, a White House official confirmed the decision on Friday.

Harris was eligible for six months of security cover after leaving office in January, as per US law, but President Joe Biden had prolonged it for an additional year through an executive order before leaving the office following defeat by the Republican Party.

Trump has now cancelled that extension through a memo, which stated: “You are hereby authorised to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorised by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former vice president Kamala D Harris.”

The move comes just weeks before Kamala Harris is set to launch a nationwide book tour to promote 107 Days, her memoir recounting her 2024 presidential campaign.

Trump himself survived two assassination attempts during his campaign last year, underscoring the heightened security risks faced by presidents and former candidates.

With the revocation, Harris will lose both Secret Service agents assigned to her and surveillance of her Los Angeles residence, along with the intelligence-gathering capabilities that help detect and prevent potential threats.

Notably, arranging comparable private protection could cost several million dollars a year.
