In December 1971, the India-Pakistan war was at its peak, with Indian forces steadily advancing and Pakistan facing repeated setbacks. On one such day, two explosions occurred in the sky within seconds of each other. Both Indian and Pakistani soldiers witnessed the blasts, but it was not immediately clear which side had carried out the strike.

The incident took place on December 12, 1971, when Indian fighter jets launched an offensive on Pakistani positions on the western front, supported by MiG-21 supersonic fighters from the 29th Squadron. Flight Lieutenant Arun Kumar Dutta commanded the Mig-21 escort, ensuring no hindrance to the mission.

As the Indian strike force advanced, Flight Lieutenant Dutta noticed two Pakistani F-104 Star Fighters approaching. Understanding their target, he devised a strategy to confront them alone.

Flight Lieutenant Dutta manoeuvred skilfully, putting his MIG-21 behind the Pakistani jets. Despite repeated attempts, the Pakistani jets could not inflict damage. Flight Lieutenant Dutta’s piloting skills, combined with the MiG-21’s agility, gave India the advantage. Eventually, the Pakistani pilots disengaged and withdrew from the encounter to avoid further risk.

However, when the Pakistani pilots attempted to flee, Flight Lieutenant Dutta pursued them. He fired two missiles from his MiG-21, hitting both Pakistani F-104s. The engagement ended with the MiG-21 successfully downing the two aircrafts, highlighting its effectiveness.

The MiG-21’s success was noted as a morale boost for Indian forces, while the Pakistani side suffered the loss of two F-104s. The wreckage of the aircraft fell into the Arabian Sea, marking a clear advantage for India in the encounter. Flight Lieutenant Arun Kumar Dutta was honoured with the Vir Chakra for his heroism in this battle.
