Aamir Khan turned to alcohol after Reena Dutta left with kids

Aamir Khan says he went from teetotaller to alcohol after Reena Dutta left with kids: ‘I drank almost a bottle a night for 1.5 years’

For Aamir Khan, honesty has never been reserved only for his films. Over the years, the actor has spoken candidly about both his professional choices and personal setbacks. In a recent conversation, he revisited one of the most difficult phases of his life—his separation from his first wife, Reena Dutta—and how it led him down an unexpected path.

A turning point after separation

Speaking on Duologue with Barun Das, Aamir revealed that the aftermath of his divorce was emotionally overwhelming, marking a drastic shift in his lifestyle.“I was a teetotaller until I went through my first divorce with Reena. And then, on the first day when she left with the kids and I was alone at home, I couldn’t handle my emotions at that time. I had never, I used to never drink alcohol. I had drunk once or twice for a couple of scenes, but that was only because I had to drink for the scene. I mean, I was not into alcohol at all.”

‘I couldn’t handle my emotions’

The actor shared that what began as a moment of vulnerability soon turned into a prolonged phase.“That night, I had alcohol at home to serve guests and all that, so I started drinking. And for the next one and a half years, I drank almost a bottle a night. Now that’s really extreme, from a person who was a teetotaller to someone who consumes a bottle a night is very extreme.”

Moving forward with acceptance

Aamir Khan’s personal life has seen several transitions since then. After parting ways with Reena Dutta, he went on to marry Kiran Rao in 2005, and the two later announced their separation in 2021 after 16 years of marriage.Today, the actor maintains a cordial bond with both his former partners and continues to co-parent his children. He is now in a relationship with Gauri Spratt, stepping into a new chapter while looking back at his past with clarity and acceptance.
