The foundation day celebrations of the Trinamool Student Congress Party (TMCP) were marred by violence on Wednesday after two of its leaders were allegedly attacked in Howrah while on their way to the student body’s central meeting. The incident took place near Liluah station in the Baruipara-Howrah locality. According to party workers, a group of assailants attacked the TMCP supporters with sharp weapons when they began chanting Trinamool slogans.

The injured have been identified as Arnab Roy, son of the councillor of Ward 11 of Dankuni Municipality and also the president of the TMCP’s ward committee, and Siddharth Roy, a student leader from Ward 21. Both sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Howrah Hospital for initial treatment before being shifted to a hospital in Kolkata for further care.

News of the assault quickly spread through the student ranks and cast a shadow over the TMCP’s foundation day programme. The opposition, already questioning the influence of the ruling party’s student wing in colleges—from Rajarhat-Gopalpur Tax to Kasba Law College, renewed its criticism, accusing the organisation of fueling unrest and violence in educational spaces.

From the rally stage, Trinamool’s top leadership sought to push back against the mounting allegations. Both Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee used the occasion to hit out at the opposition.

Mamata, addressing thousands of students, said, “Those who talk about big students, and go to court every day to block recruitment, block admission, I am sorry that the joint results have been delayed. Those who file cases in court, file cases together, and then blame us. They are number. Fight in politics, if you don’t get there, fight through the back door, block recruitment, block admission, and talk big words.”

The remarks come at a politically sensitive time, with the ruling party facing criticism over recruitment scams and delays in the education sector.

Police have not yet confirmed who carried out the Howrah attack. An investigation is underway.
