In a groundbreaking initiative, GSVM Medical College in Kanpur is set to enhance patient care using new technology. The institution will implement AI-based smart mattresses for critically ill patients. These innovative mattresses will instantly alert doctors and nurses via an alarm when a patient’s health deteriorates, enabling immediate medical intervention and potentially saving lives. Notably, the college treats patients from Kanpur and approximately 18 neighbouring districts, benefiting thousands.

Code Blue Out: Alerts Now Go Directly to Staff

Previously, when a patient’s condition suddenly worsened, doctors and nurses used the code word ‘Code Blue’ to signal a medical emergency. Now, smart mattresses will automatically send an alarm and a red alert directly to the doctor’s and nurse’s mobile, tablet, or computer the moment a patient’s condition deteriorates.

For instance, if a patient’s heart rate suddenly hits 150, a beeping alert appears on the screen, enabling the doctor to respond immediately.

Smart Mattresses To Be Installed In Batches Of 10

Dr. Sanjay Kala, Principal of GSVM Medical College, said preparations are underway to install 10 smart mattresses, each costing around Rs 5 lakh. The machines will be procured using the CSR fund. Initially, 10 mattresses will be deployed, with plans to increase the number later. This will make GSVM the first government medical college in the state to use such advanced technology.

Round-The-Clock Monitoring For Critical Patients

Dr. Kala explained that seriously ill patients often experience gradual internal deterioration, requiring continuous 24-hour care. Until now, doctors and nurses have relied on coordination without machines, but with the smart mattresses, monitoring will become easier. The device will instantly alert doctors if a patient’s condition worsens, enabling faster treatment and potentially reducing mortality rates.

Nearby District Patients To Benefit

GSVM Medical College, the largest medical institute in Bundelkhand and 18 surrounding districts, treats thousands of patients daily. With the installation of smart mattresses, patients will now have access to advanced care, enhancing doctors’ ability to save lives.
