A joint operation by the Gurugram Police and the Special Task Force (STF) thwarted a fresh assassination attempt on Haryanvi singer-rapper Rahul Fazilpuria, officials said on Wednesday. The artist had narrowly escaped a gun attack on July 14.

According to police, five sharpshooters were arrested following a late-night encounter on Tuesday along Pataudi Road near Wazirpur village. Four of them sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange of fire.

“Preliminary investigation shows the accused were part of gangs run by Rohit Sardhaniya and Deepak Nandal. They were planning to target Fazilpuria and were also linked to the killing of his financier, Rohit Shokeen, last month,” a Gurugram Police spokesperson said.

The arrested men were identified as Vinod Pehalwan of Jhajjar, along with Padam alias Raja, Shubham alias Kala, Gautam alias Gogi, and Ashish alias Ashu — all residents of Sonipat.

Police said they had received a tip-off about the gang’s movement and set up a barricade on Pataudi Road around midnight.

When an Innova carrying the suspects was signalled to stop, its occupants opened fire. Officers retaliated, leaving four men injured with bullet wounds to their legs.

In all, around 19 rounds were exchanged before the attackers were subdued, police added.

The injured shooters were admitted to the Civil Hospital in Sector 10, while one of them, Gautam, was immediately taken into custody.

The case comes against the backdrop of rising threats to the singer.

On July 14, assailants fired two bullets at Fazilpuria’s car on the Badshahpur Southern Peripheral Road, though he escaped unscathed.

Less than a month later, on August 4, financier Rohit Shokeen was shot dead near Palm Hills society in Sector 77.
