Weather Update: IMD Predicts More Rain For North India As J&K, Himachal Battle Heavy Downpour

The IMD predicted extremely heavy rainfall over Jammu and northwest Punjab on Tuesday, and isolated very heavy rainfall over Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted more rainfall in North India, even as several areas, particularly Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, bore the brunt of heavy showers that triggered flash floods and landslides.

The IMD predicted extremely heavy rainfall over Jammu and northwest Punjab on Tuesday (August 26), while isolated heavy rainfall was likely to continue over Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, East Rajasthan, J&K, Haryana and Punjab during the next seven days.

The weather department also said that isolated very heavy rainfall was expected over northwest Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday, over Himachal Pradesh and East Rajasthan from August 29 to September 1, and over Uttarakhand on August 28 and 29.

Light to moderate rainfall at many places over Northwest India, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, was expected over the Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Uttarakhand, during the next seven days.

The prediction came as several states are battling heavy rains that have caused widespread destruction. At least nine people were killed, and several houses and roads were destroyed after cloudbursts and landslides battered Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district.

Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc

A major landslide in Ardhkwari near the Vaishno Devi shrine left five people dead and several injured. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called the situation “quite serious” and said he was flying to Jammu to monitor the crisis.

Most rivers are streams are flowing in spate in Kashmir, prompting authorities to urge people to refrain from venturing in and around the hill slopes and water bodies.

In Himachal Pradesh, Shops were washed away, buildings collapsed, highways were cut off, and residential areas were inundated as heavy rain triggered fresh landslides and flash floods at several places of the state. At least 68 roads, including three national highways, have been blocked at several places, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).

The local meteorological office has issued a ‘red’ alert, warning of intense to very intense spells of rain at isolated places in Kangra, Chamba, and Lahaul and Spiti districts on Tuesday. It has also issued an ‘orange’ alert for intense spells of rain in Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Solan, Mandi and Kullu districts and Shimla city.

Flash floods triggered by heavy rains have caused the water level in the Beas River to rise, washing away a washed away a multi-storey hotel and four shops in Manali. The Manali-Leh highway was blocked at several points.

Meanwhile, people have started evacuating from Punjab’s Ferozepur, particularly from villages along the river areas, as heavy rainfall for the past two days worsened the flood situation. The Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers and seasonal rivulets are in spate because of heavy rainfall and the release of surplus water from the Pong and Bhakra dams.

The flood situation in many villages in Kapurthala district deteriorated on Tuesday following incessant rains and the swollen Beas river inundating vast tracts of farmlands. Villagers have been advised to evacuate and crops have been destroyed.
