In a heartfelt statement, acclaimed vocalist Shreya Ghoshal voiced her worries regarding the marginalization of women in India’s contemporary music landscape, pointing out a significant disparity on the charts. She reminisced about the era of iconic figures such as Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, juxtaposing it with the thriving prominence of female superstars like Taylor Swift and Rihanna abroad.

In a recent interview, the singer opened up about her thoughts on the current music industry and how she feels women are not that present in the current music scenario.

The singer recently featured on Raj Shamani’s latest podcast episode, where she opened up about her thoughts on the music industry. She specifically touched upon the topic of gender and revealed that she feels that there are not many female singers in the Indian music industry.

The star also shared that if one were to observe the music charts today, most of the artists would not be women. She talked about how there are barely 10 female artists on the music list. “It is that lopsided. This was not how it was in our country. It is very ‘now’. This lopsidedness has come now,” she further added.She also talked about the difference in how the times have changed in the past couple of years. “Jo jamana tha Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, jis tarah se unhone command kiya hain… they were bigger than all the other male singers. ((Look at Lata Mangeshkar’s and, Asha Bhosle and how they commanded that era)

Difference in the Indian music industry vs the Western music industry

The famed playback singer also opened up about the differences in the West, as well as in India, when it comes to such singers and musicians. She cited during the interview that Taylor Swift and Rihanna are great examples of women dominating the music industry. She added that they have worked on their music and have also focused on working on the community and culture around them, which has helped them rise to world dominance. Comparing India to the same, she stated that “India thoda sa patriarchal hain. Aaj bhi” (Even today, India is patriarchal).
