The Allahabad High Court has granted bail to a man named Adil Abbas, accused of blackmailing and exploiting a 32-year-old woman and allegedly pressuring her to undergo religious conversion.

The court noted that the complainant was a major, the relationship between the two had started consensually in their workplace before turning sour, and no alleged photographs or videos said to have been used for blackmail, were recovered during the investigation.

The bench of Justice Samit Gopal, deciding the bail plea, also noted that the charge-sheet had already been filed and two other named co-accused were exonerated. The court held that in the absence of convincing material suggesting tampering with evidence, Abbas could be released on bail, subject to strict conditions.

The FIR in the case was lodged on May 31, 2025, at Indirapuram police station in Ghaziabad. The complainant alleged that Abbas had befriended her at work, recorded private photographs and videos, and threatened to make them public. She further claimed he coerced her into a physical relationship, extorted nearly Rs 2 lakh, and pressured her to marry and convert.

Abbas’s counsel argued that the complainant was an adult who voluntarily entered into the relationship, which later turned bitter. It was submitted that no videos or photographs were recovered, the complainant refused medical examination, and Abbas had no prior criminal record. Abbas has been in custody since June 5.

Opposing bail, the prosecution contended that Abbas’s family continued to track and threaten the complainant even after his arrest.

The court, after considering the material on record, held that the absence of recovered photographs or videos, the exoneration of co-accused, and the filing of the charge-sheet reduced the likelihood of tampering with evidence.

Moreover, granting bail, the court imposed conditions requiring Abbas to refrain from delaying trial proceedings.

The high court also specifically barred Abbas or his family members from tracing or tracking the complainant, and authorised the trial court to cancel bail in the event of any violation.
