Greater Noida’s shocking dowry-related murder of a young woman named Nikki has triggered widespread anger and fear across western Uttar Pradesh. The case, in which police allege her husband and in-laws brutally killed her over dowry demands, has now become a rallying point for community leaders who say the safety of daughters must come before tradition.

In Baghpat district’s Mitali village, a massive gathering of the Thakur community, named the ‘Kesariya Mahapanchayat’, was convened in response to the crime. The panchayat saw unprecedented participation, where leaders and villagers alike debated how to protect their daughters in an environment where crimes against women are rising.

At the heart of the discussion was a striking declaration made by Thakur Kunwar Ajay Pratap Singh, President of the All India Kshatriya Mahasabha. Addressing the assembly, he said, “We may or may not give the gold, silver and money that we give to our daughters in dowry and Kanyadan, but a dagger or sword and revolver must be given… if a revolver is expensive for someone, then give that katta.”

Singh argued that traditional practices around dowry had made daughters more vulnerable, not safer. “We are forgetting our old tradition. Today, when we marry off our daughter, we give her gold, silver and money. But if she goes to the market wearing it, she will be robbed. So that no thief can harass her, you may or may not give money or gold or silver to your daughter, but you must give her a dagger and a sword. At present, the situation is like this and if the daughter is ours, then the responsibility of her safety is also ours,” he told the gathering.

The sentiment of arming daughters with swords, daggers, or even firearms was received with loud support from the crowd, many of whom said they were losing faith in the system’s ability to protect women.

Meanwhile, police continue to investigate Nikki’s death. Initial findings suggest that her husband, Vipin Bhati, and members of his family were directly involved in her killing. Nikki’s sister Kanchan has publicly alleged that Nikki was regularly harassed and tortured for dowry. So far, four accused individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.
